What is the Australian Infantry Force (AIF)?
The Australian Imperial Force was the first voluntary made Infantry force.
In the year 1914 when the AIF was formed 20,000 Australian men enlisted and
joined. They were organised into two different forces; the 1st Infantry
Division and the Light Horse Brigade. By December they were shipped to Egypt for
training. Whilst in Egypt the AIF was joined with 10,000 New Zealand troops.
These men formed the ANZACs (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps). They were
then deployed on the western front where they experienced terrible fighting,
disease, death and horror for three years (Darlington, 2012).
